In September of 2009, Holiday Inn, the first internationally-recognised hotel chain will open in Male, the capital of the Maldives.  Until now, all of the best hotels in the Maldives have been situated on the outlying islands, meaning that tourists have little to no reason to stay in the capital city.  While visitors to the island nation will likely continue to use the hotels on other islands, the Holiday Inn Male should become very popular with people, especially those who have an early flight departure and want to stay in Male for the last night of their holiday, or for those arriving late at night on an international flight.  Sea plan and water taxi journeys from Male to the other islands can be quite long, so this is a great option.  It also allows people to explore the nation’s capital, take advantage of some tax-free shopping and soak up some local history and culture.  The opening of Holiday Inn Male promises to bring quite a boost to the capital city, both in terms of direct employment and tourist dollars.

Holiday Inn – A Worldwide Chain

Holiday Inn is one of the world’s most far-reaching hotel brands, with over 1,300 hotels in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.  The chain blossomed from a need to regulate the consistency of roadside lodges in the United States.  Today, the chain continues to be a benchmark of hotel quality around the world.

Holiday Inn Male will feature 117 guest rooms, located in the tallest building on the island (15 storeys).  The rooms will be a combination of superior, deluxe, deluxe ocean view and premiere rooms, with one presidential suite for the most discerning visitors.  All rooms at Holiday Inn Male will be equipped with the latest in technology and comfort from high-speed internet, flat-screen televisions, safety deposit boxes and mini-bars.  The hotel itself will offer conference facilities, a selection of restaurants and bars, 24-hour room service, a health club and spa.  A full range of activities will also be on offer, including scuba diving, snorkelling, sports fishing and a variety of tours.

Importance of Holiday Inn to the Maldives

The opening of a Holiday Inn hotel in the Maldives is very important to this island nation.  While most of the world’s leading hotel chains are already present in the Maldives, there are no leading hotels present in the capital city of Male.  This means that visitors to the island tend to bypass the city and as a result, all tourist expenditure is made at the individual hotels and resorts dotted around the archipelago.  While this is good for the country, having a hotel in the capital city, where tourists will be more inclined to venture outside the hotel and spend money at small, independently owned businesses is undoubtedly a great way to stimulate the Maldivian economy.  Holiday Inn Male should also spur on the development of other tourist-related businesses in the city, such as restaurants and shops.
