The Frogfish – Master Of Camouflage
The frogfish may not be the best-looking fish out there, but they may just be one of the geniuses among the other marine species
The frogfish is a perfect example of how evolution could transform species into what is essential in order to survive in a given circumstance. They belong to the Lophiiforme group, or the bony fishes named for their characteristic mode of predation, where an illicium (or a fleshy growth from the fish’s head) serves as a lure for their prey. The frogfish are generally 3 to 40 centimeters large and can be found mostly in the shallow, tropical waters throughout the world. They reside usually between 10 to 100 meters underwater and they could remain in the exact same spot for hours, since they don’t move very often.
The frogfish have their own unique camouflage. They could mimic any form of marine life or object; and as far as it goes, they are very reliant on it. Since they lack scales or other protective covers in their bodies, the frogfish have been known to be attacked or even killed by other smaller fishes everytime they fail to work on their camouflaging ways. But these frogfish are very smart that their camouflages aren’t just limited to the appearance of their bodies. They tend to seek out areas where they could camouflage themselves and where it could provide shelter for its appearance at the same time. Frogfish also make use of a camouflage technique referred to as “aggressive mimicry”, where instead of camouflaging for the purpose of remaining unseen for defense, they take the form of their potential preys meal. This then lures the frogfish’s prey into striking range where they can then attack.
